Lifelong south LA duck hunter, “Big John” Fitzpatrick on his handmade custom calls that imitate the mallard wheeze, pintail, teal and widgeon whistles, the one call that calls ‘em all!
I make them in my small shop behind my house in Covington. I use Cocabola wood because of its great density and natural oils and general beauty. The natural oils in it are great for wet, humid duck hunting conditions.
I cut blanks 1”x1”X 3 ¾” long. Then center bore ½”, chuck up on lathe, turn to shape then sand down to 600 grit burnish with blue jean piece. Apply beeswax, melt in on lathe and polish. Next I drill sound holes on drill press, cut stopper and tone board and adjust sound using sound holes and trimming tone board. Lastly I glue in parts and 10 gauge brass casing. Then its TOOT AND SHOOT!
Colors can vary from dark yellowish tine to dark reddish brown, specify which you prefer and I’ll do my best to send it if available. My calls have a lifetime warranty under normal conditions excluding your dog eating it, I will repair or replace it free, you just pay shipping. Purchase price $60 includes shipping.
